Lois Mailou Jones

Street Vendors, Port au Prince Haiti (1978)

Here's another tidbit I got from the October issue of Arts & Activities magazine:

Lois Mailou Jones:

A prolific artist whose work spanned 75 year.  Jones was a pioneer of African-American artists. Her work began during the Harlem Renaissance, a time when artists strove to blend African influence with the depiction of the African-American experience of the time. Some of  her later works reflect themes of Haitian and African culture, women's issue, nature, but her work always demonstrated a vibrancy and lust for life.

There is a free fantastic 28 page catalog which explains the artists life and work in depth. that you can download.  The catalog accompanies the exhibit Lois Mailou Jones: A Life in Vibrant Color.

Here are the links you'll need to check out the exhibit and download the catalog.
